On 13 April 2026, the Government of Liberia, through the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), officially launched the National Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Smart Metering Project, marking a significant milestone in the country's ongoing electricity-sector modernisation agenda. The national launch represented a strategic transition from conventional or manual electricity metering toward a more intelligent, automated, transparent, and data-driven system for electricity consumption measurement, billing, monitoring, and revenue management. The initiative is designed to strengthen the efficiency and accountability of Liberia's electricity distribution system while improving the quality of service delivered to consumers. Through the deployment of smart meters and associated digital technologies, the project provides LEC with enhanced capabilities to obtain accurate consumption data, identify abnormal usage patterns, detect potential meter tampering, improve billing accuracy, and support more effective revenue collection. More broadly, the launch demonstrates the Government's commitment to leveraging technology and institutional partnerships to address longstanding structural challenges within the electricity sector and to establish a stronger foundation for sustainable energy development.
The 13 April 2026 national launch marked a significant technological and institutional transformation in Liberia's electricity sector. Implemented by LEC in collaboration with its technology partner - Senapt, the AMI initiative aims to improve operational efficiency, billing accuracy, transparency, revenue collection, and customer confidence through data-driven electricity management. The launch established an important foundation for expanding smart metering nationwide and advancing Liberia toward a more reliable, efficient, transparent, and sustainable electricity system.
